Wall Hedge Fence
4 May – 15 September 2013
The wall, the hedge, and the fence are barriers belonging to the public
space. They separate and define the spaces that surround us.
At this exhibition three artists allow visitors to experience the wall, the
hedge, and the fence performing new and alternative functions.
Søren Dahlgaard has lifted the hedge out of its habitual suburban setting,
transferring it to new locations on the art route leading from KØS through
Køge to the Søndre Havn harbour area. Here, visitors can encounter no less
than four different, interactive, wacky hedges: the shaking hedge, the monumental
hedge, the rotating hedge, and the one that moves up and down.
Søren Behncke alias Bag Man has enlisted a team of assistants via the
Danish broadcasting corporation DR’s art club to help him weave plastic
bags into a wire fence, thereby conjuring up motifs from the past to the
present in a pixellated idiom based on plastic bags.
The artist Christian Schmidt-Rasmussen has experimented with an entirely
new mode of expression for the 32 m concrete wall separating Strandengen
and the industrial area on Søndre Havn.
The display here shows the artists’ preliminary works, sketches, and
research materials that formed part of their process of relating to the
walls, hedges, and fences of Køge.
